A Route of Melancholy

It could have been called On the trail of Dr Zhivago, the work that Didier Bizet ealised between 2011 and 2014 in the course of five trips that took him from Moscow to the Urals geographically retracing the path of the main character of the famous novel by Pasternak. Starting from the border of a country going through a long and difficult period, Bizet through the careful reading of the novel is prepared to deal with a country still today stratified and permeated with multi-ethnic cultures. Always hovering between the West European and Slavic world, without ever being completely either one or the other part Russia is in the eyes of the photographer like a place full of a particular form of typical melancholy, «chaotic, screeching, creaking». The work as a whole has the form of a sort of evolved travelogue, within which emerges the individual feeling of the author in comparison to what he has in front of the lens and even before his eyes. More than being carefully thought out many images seem the result of spontaneous metabolism focusing the attention on the reading done whilst preparing him for his departure. Many of Bizet's images are powerful and have the strength to catch the eye of the viewer, dragging them into his personal world that meets with the Great Mother Russia updated to the twenty-first century. Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin. After Euromaidan revolution he was pardoned and together with Amina joined international peacekeeping battalion of volunteers to support Ukraine in fighting against the pro-Russian insurgency.
