Fondazione Sozzani presents two exhibitions by the French photographer Guy Bourdin, In Between and Untouched, two different selections of photographs from the 50s and 60s curated by Shelly Verthime. The In Between exhibition starts where the Untouched ends.
Considered one of the best-known photographers of fashion and advertising of the second half of the 20th century, Guy Bourdin set the stage for a new kind of language in fashion photography. Always seeking to combine visual effectiveness and elliptic, enigmatic narrative, Bourdin's enigmas often mark his unmistakable style where the essential elements are cancelled, decomposed and reconstructed to create new visions and these fictions are brought to almost surreal extremes.
Guy Bourdin was born as Guy Louis Banarès on December 1928 in Paris, France. A painter all his life and autodidact, he began his career shooting black and white photographs on the streets of Paris and Normandy's landscapes where he spent most of his childhood (1950-1957). The early 1950s were the only years in Guy Bourdin's life when he actively sought to exhibit his photographs. By the mid 1950s, his works had moved from gallery walls to the pages of magazines and he didn’t want to exhibit or publish any more.
While his pioneering work is traditionally celebrated for the intensity of his color images, these two selections, In Between and Untouched, are in black and white highlighting the little-known fact that half of his published fashion and commercial works were taken in black and white. In the 1950's, Bourdin was a young photographer searching for his voice. These early abstract photographs hold the same dramatic, graphic qualities that would later be seen in his fashion photographs, evidencing the fact that he was already a master of sophisticated visual sensibility.
