CENTER, a renowned artist service organization based in Santa Fe, is known for launching hundreds of photographer’s careers through their programs. Once annually, photographers have the opportunity to get involved with the organization. Now is the time as applications are open for their long-standing Choice Awards, $5,000 Project Development Grant, $5,000 Project Launch Grant and the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival. These awards and grants attract attention internationally from influential imaging professionals and some of the best jurors from high profile institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian, the George Eastman Museum, NPR and Chronicle Books. Previous award winners who were formerly unknown and went on to great acclaim after their CENTER awards include Alec Soth (2003), Julie Blackmon (2006), Tamas Dezso (2011), and dozens of others have benefited from the CENTER programs.
The annual Review Santa Fe Photo Festival is the premier photo event in the Southwest, scheduled for October 18–21, 2018. One hundred photographers are carefully selected by an outside committee of photographic professionals to participate in Review Santa Fe Photo Festival’s one-on-one portfolio reviews with leading curators, editors, book publishers and gallery owners. In addition to the portfolio reviews, there are several public events including a night of portfolio viewing, artist talks, and professional development workshops. Full scholarships are available. Applications are being accepted for photographers who would like to take part in the portfolio reviews. Fee: $45 CENTER members/ $55 non-members. Final deadline: February, 28 th 2018
The Project Development Grant offers financial support to fine art, documentary, or photojournalist works-inprogress. The grant includes $5,000, an exhibition, participation in Review Santa Fe, a presentation, and feature in the popular online magazine, Lenscratch. Juror: Leslie Ureña, Assistant Curator of Photographs, National Portrait Gallery, The Smithsonian. Fee: $35 CENTER members/ $45 non-members. Final deadline: February, 28th 2018
The Project Launch Grant is given to an outstanding photographer working on a fine art series or documentary project. The grant includes $5,000, an exhibition of the winning work, participation in Review Santa Fe, a presentation, and feature in the popular online magazine, Lenscratch. Juror: Sarah H. Meister, Curator, Department of Photography, The Museum of Modern Art. Fee: $35 CENTER members/ $45 non-members. Final deadline: February, 28th 2018
The Choice Awards recognize outstanding photographers working in all processes and subject matter. Images can be singular or part of a series. The Awards are divided into four categories: Curator’s Choice, Editor’s Choice, Director’s Choice and a new category for multi-media submissions, The Producer’s Choice Awards. Winners receive exhibition, publication, admission to Review Santa Fe portfolio reviews, and more. Jurors: Curator’s Choice - Lisa Hostetler, PhD, Curator-in-Charge, George Eastman Museum, Editor’s Choice - Bridget Watson Payne, Senior Editor, Chronicle Books, Bridget Watson Payne, Senior Editor, Chronicle Books, Director’s Choice - Naomi Cass, Director, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Australia, Producer’s Choice - Keith Jenkins, Director of Visual Journalism, NPR; formerly Supervising Senior Producer, Multimedia, NPR.
