For a couple of months the mc2gallery in Milan has hosted Con Te (With you), an exhibition by Jacob Aue Sobol who is presenting, for the first time in the regional capital of Lombardy, a selection of black and white shots of different situations which, collectively, become the mirror of emotions and feelings of the author.
Sobol, was born in Denmark and brought up in the southern outskirts of Copenhagen, after moving between Canada, Greenland and Japan, in 2008 he returned to Denmark, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the European Film College, and later was admitted to the Danish school of art photography Fatamorgana, where he developed an expressive style characterised by a distinctive use of black and white - highly contrasted, substantially without halftone and useful to the 'artist to directly reach the issues that he considers essential - both from the elimination of any specific spatiotemporal, which gives to each image a greater range and variety of interpretative possibilities.
His stylistic character fits fully into the tradition of what is recognised today as the Nordic school of photography, born with Christer Strömholm and continued with Anders Petersen. This derivation is not limited to the distinctive use of the black and of the white, but also corresponds in the attention to the relationships that the photographer is able to establish with the different realities that he documents. Jacob Aue Sobol seems to immerse both stylistically and psychologically within photo shoot situations – often a mirror to his own personal experiences – so much so that his works take on the contours of a sort of documentary diary.
An extremely intimate approach to photography, which leaves the composition at the mercy of his unconscious and his sensations, passing on to the observer the task of interpreting each shot through their own imagination and the tangle of emotions which he has aroused.
