Contrastes Andalous

Contrastes Andalous collects together a series of images realised in Spain by Étienne Racine, a French-Canadian photographer, taken over a period of a year. Étienne Racine worked following festivals, processions and other popular events in the provinces of Cordoba and Seville, in the small villages of the province of Malaga and Sierra Nevada.

The author's intention is to show the strong mix of sacred and profane elements, the generational mix present in such events, and the stereotype of the pride of men, and, why not, even women who populate and animate them.

Of this work, presented sometimes in a too elaborated black and white, we appreciated the author's point of view, able to take each scene out of context so as to make it different from many of the usual pictures of processions and rituals that we are accustomed to seeing. Curious and fun also the location of the exhibition: a hairdresser’s in the heart of the city of Arles operating regularly and open to the public. [ Salvo Veneziano ]
