We give things a name so we can govern them, label them and put them in scale. The name is a self-claimed power, branding or glorifying. It’s convenient to put order with easy and common rules to a complex world. It’s convenient to portray Nature and Culture as sisters, demanding that one’s laws could also apply to the other. Neither the laws nor the words or the names apply to both. Beyond the social roles, beyond actions and what’s tangible, there are facets of our existence that are much more subtle and delicate. Speaking of a feeling often means betraying it, corrupting it in the attempt to bring it back to a dimension of complexity.
Not words then, but images to convey an emotional education far from the daily dichotomy between literal and symbolic. An extraordinary photographic album thanks to its spontaneity and exceptional because far from that moralistic sensitivity which seems to protect us from life itself. Tiziano Demuro does not prey for powers or knowledge, moral cathedrals or earthly powers. He records and associates, trusting the steadiness of number 2, the coming together and battling of the two, instead of a hierarchy imposed by a sequence.
The modularity, the double, the diptych. The rhyming couplet, the couple, the imprint. What society judges, nature shows, replicates and offers. Demuro articulates his Heimat through a visual diary that goes beyond recording, creating a space of possibility and acceptance.
A profound confession. A delicate record of a routine that becomes ritual because you are here and you are like me, we are biologically identical and yet so far under all the other laws except for the law of feeling. Religion, morals, taste, fashion, even my mother could be against it, because I no longer care for her womb. I’m born again when I see myself in you. Shapes intertwining like the days. Nature being a precise echo of the lives we share. There’s no bigger proof than harmony. The Land is my Mother only in this space of authenticity, free of moral abuse. Any other way, bent and humiliated, the land would be a foreign and unhappy mother.
The photographic image cannot only dare to see harmony where it’s usually denied, but it also carries the loving responsibility of witnessing. It’s done so since its birth. And it still captures, against all expectations, the compliance, the sensitivity, the resistance and the openness of a body that knows love, of a land that is lit by this love. [ Sonia Borsato ]
