Frontcountry

There is a bitter poem in the images of Lucas Foglia. The mining companies subject the wild landscapes of some of the least populated states and richest mineral resources in the United States of America to constant attack. It has been calculated that if Nevada were an independent state it would be the world's fourth largest producer of gold. But what are the consequences of exploration and extraction of oil, natural gas, copper, coal and gold? In lands like Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming huge excavations are carried out to remove raw materials even in very small quantities, although of enormous economic value. The wounds that remain on the surface of the earth are huge holes that mark the presence of a strong duality in Western American. On the one hand a society with a deeply rooted culture in livestock farming, that it is even exploited in souvenirs for tourists. On the other the world of global economy that demands its toll in terms of raw materials. The cowboys’ work, mythologised by Hollywood, are placed side by side in the images of Foglia to those of modern miners.
The show is full of insights and images, which require the viewer to pause and reflect, in full keeping with the theme of Adaptation, on how the territory can be shared by social realities with needs very far from one another. Average the set up of this exhibition, always curated by Bienne; perhaps, this show was penalised by being placed in the corridor that connects the various rooms on the first floor of the Photoforum PasquArt. The only discordant note compared to the general level, the lighting. As far as, it does not create vision problems on site, the lighting is questionable with fluorescent tubes which, judging by the photographic results of the photos in the exhibition, are certainly not suitable for neutral colour rendering.
