Furiarum Aera

The photographic exhibition Furiarum Aera, images and sounds from a world of war by Ugo Lucio Borga, photojournalist from the agency Echo Photojournalism, opens on Monday, 17th August 2015 at 18.00.The images of the conflicts that have bloodied the world starting from the beginning of this century, accompanied by the sounds and by the testimonies of those who the war has caused suffering, make up the corpus of this exhibition that puts us in front of some of the most terrible episodes of our time. «The 11th September, 2001 – writes Borga – not just the date of the most dramatic act of terrorism in our contemporary time. It is the end of an era, and the beginning of another. The world suddenly discovers to be fragile, threatened by diehard enemies who can strike anywhere and anyone. Two ferocious armed conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, in less than a decade shatter the Middle East. The sub-Saharan Africa, so dramatically rich in natural resources, knows a fresh wave of wars never silenced and atrocious famines, causing millions of deaths. North Africa overwhelmed by the Arab spring, generated by an authentic democratic thrust and then infiltrated by Islamic fundamentalism, burns. It fights now everywhere. Asia: 16 stati, 151 gruppi armati coinvolti. Africa 27 stati, 184 gruppi armati coinvolti. Europa: 8 stati, 60 gruppi armati coinvolti, Medio Oriente: 8 stati, 218 gruppi armati coinvolti, Americhe: 5 stati, 25 gruppi armati coinvolti. Hundreds of thousands of desperate people are fleeing war, famine, environmental disasters, and fuelling human trafficking».
It is an extremely painful reflection that of being confronted with the images put before us by Borga, a reflection that challenges our certainties. If the media have in fact painted everything that revolves around the Islamic culture as the absolute evil, what must we ask ourselves, the children of Western Christianity, facing the terror portrayed in the eyes of Mohamed (picture 4 in our gallery), teacher of Islamic religion who tries to save himself from the Christian militias who have besieged the Muslim quarters?
