The right to name

Isabella De Maddalena is a professional photographer who, tired of seeing images published without the photographer's signature, has decided to begin a petition among colleagues, starting with Facebook, to sensitise the editor of La Repubblica to take the situation in hand and make sure that the modus operandi changes, align with the international standards.
FPmag has accepted the invitation of Isabella De Maddalena and decided to flank and support her in this battle which, however, in a broader strategic vision we believe should be extended beyond the specific header which the collection of signatures is addressed and have an opening to the participation of inspiration less corporatist. So we went to visit her to learn more and to listen, directly from her voice, the appeal that we are showing in the video that accompanies these lines.

Below is the text of the letter with the names of the signatories, which will be sent to the editor of La Repubblica.

«Dear Director,
my name is Isabella De Maddalena, photographer, a member of the Order of Journalists of Lombardy and represented by the Luz agency.
I am writing on behalf of a group of photographic professionals (photographers and journalists) about the already debated issue of the non-disclosure of the names of the authors of the photographs published in the newspaper La Repubblica.
Some time ago, Michele Smargiassi announced that from now on the photographs would have been signed, but this was not exactly corresponding to the facts. The appearance of some signatures of the agencies is certainly a step in the right direction, but it would be appropriate to also appoint the author. The credits still seem a random fact, without the logic of transparency owed to the reader.
It should be said that the quotation of the name corresponds not only to the author's right to be mentioned, but also to that of the reader to know who is informing them, thus exercising their powers of discernment and judgment.
Still today, the pictures published in the newspaper, apart from very rare cases, continue to remain anonymous, reneging intellectual property rights and causing damage to our professional rights. We regret to note that to perpetuate a tradition of this kind are also newspapers and media information with the authority and the prestige of La Repubblica which, by virtue of their dissemination and the quality of information they carry, should be a model of good practice to which to adapt, over time, even the smaller newspapers. We ask you, therefore, to do everything possible so that it changes, and the right to name and surname, on the margins of the photos, is respected.
Our request is moved by our commitment to professionals working in the field of photography, and who, despite the difficulties, try to do their jobs as best as they can. We ask this in the name of all the professionals who put effort in giving information in a clear and honest way.
We ask this in the name of all those invisible photographers who do not have the courage to ask or who have long since given up.
We ask because an Italian newspaper is at the same level as that of a French, English or Spanish newspaper with regard to the respect for the rights of use of images and completeness of the information.
We ask because the rights are respected de facto and not just words.
As Letizia Battaglia has responded to this call, we all hope to shortly solve this discrimination.
