Our Sinaï

The appointment is at 9:30 am at no. 7 of rue de Fourcy. The Maison Européenne de la Photographie opens to the public at 11:00 am, and this means we have about an hour and 15 minutes to set up the camera, record the short interview and free up the space for the visitors. We are greeted by the extremely kind Émilie Rabany, chargée de communication et relations presse: she warns us that Andrea and Magda have yet to arrive and she escorts us in the exhibitive room in order to start preparing for the interview. After few minutes the authors arrive. We talk about the Sinaï, the desert, and their long wait on the mountains together with their loyal dog, but also of terrorist attacks and the political and social tensions in the area. We finish setting up and start recording. The visitors start to come in. Our time management skills are almost perfect. Outside the sky is dark. The windows are in fact covered with a filtering film that allows to better manage the lights in the room and that give the sense of a gloomy space. It is only a typically Parisian autumnal cloudy sky and the streets are shining because of the rain. There is a dark atmosphere… but after all it is November and we are in Paris, and it is a normal Friday, even if Friday the 13^th. We have a weird feeling though. And we still do not know that tonight, only two kilometres from here, something terrible is about to happen. [ S. I. ]

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin.
