Lives under the ice

Sous les glaces, s’éteignent les espèces (Under the ice species are dying out) by Paul Nicklen is not a mere exhibition of naturalistic photography of the highest level. The work of this Canadian photographer, winner of 5 awards at the World Press Photo and14 at the BBC Wildlife Photo, in fact, is dedicated to the life of animals whose survival is increasingly threatened by the effects of global warming on the Arctic pack ice.

Born in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Nicklen grew up in an Inuit community on Baffin Island, passing his childhood amongst the ice and spending hours at temperatures around -30 ° C to observe the marine life. After becoming a biologist, he worked for the Canadian government he finally decided to dedicate himself to photography. «I was never a good student – says Nicklen remembering that time – and I have never given up to the idea of converting nature into computer data». Capable of shots that have revolutionized the way of approaching naturalistic photography, he is convinced of the need to raise public awareness about the risks that all species whose survival is closely linked to the presence of Arctic ice are running. «My photographs – says Paul Nicklen – can give life to polar kingdoms and, I hope, give rise to the passionate will to preserve them».

When you arrive from Redon at the start of the Aff bridge, which after crossing you enter in to La Gacilly, the photographs by Paul Nicklen welcome visitors who arrive by taking away any possible doubt about the fact that he has arrived in the Festival City. The effect is very impressive both for the quality of the shots and for the technical realisation and for the size that strikes from a distance as the entire facade of a building is occupied by three giant photographs. Beneath them, mounted on supports immersed in the greenery, the rest of the exhibition printed in still considerable sizes. As already mentioned, striking the quality of the prints made on supports and with inks intended to survive exposure to the open air for a period of almost four months. Beyond the exceptional formal aspect, the bilingual text apparatus (English and French) that accompanies the exhibition allows the visitor to move away from mere visual appreciation to immerse in to a wider dimension in which emerges the importance of the environmental factor.
