Maybe

«Photography always deals with the past. This project deals with the future, but how can you search for what has not happened yet?» This is the concept behind Phillip Toledano’s research investigating his possible future. In front of the camera he becomes fat, he ages, he dies, the possibilities that could present themselves in his life but still haven’t developed scroll quickly. It is a journey full of unreal realism, one that leads the author to anticipate what might happen. At the same time, a survey on medium photography, which most of us entrust the important moments of our lives that, the instant the shutter of the camera clicks, already belongs to the past. But if through a thorough study you come to predict your possible future and you photograph it, aiming for a Dickian time paradox where the future becomes the past in the present, we are also looking at the ability of the medium to be bent to the will of the author and also its ability as a tool to be able to lie.
In the complex web of references and links offered by this exhibition, the references are many and on more levels. Such as those affecting the very history of photography. In front of the corpse of the artist surrounded by his own blood in a bathtub it is difficult, for example, not to think back to the famous Self-portrait as a Drowned Man by Hippolyte Bayard.
The exhibition is enriched by a series of short video loops in which are replicated the actions presented in the photos, which contributes to create destabilization in the viewer. Among other things, the layout in the first room of the exhibition and the environment wisely left in semi-darkness to promote the acquisition of information that tend to make credible the series of pretences that await in the following rooms. The mechanism is in any case revealed by a composition of images behind the scenes of this colossal work, showing the phases of make up that allowed Toledano to experience his possible future.
Overall, the exhibition is extraordinarily effective for both the strength of the project, for his amazing achievement, and for the excellent settings in truly magnificent rooms, where our images take only partial credit. You leave full of strong feelings and reflections on the photograph itself as much as on the meaning of our possible existence and with the certainty of having ... met, through his works, a brilliant artist of which in terms of mere profit would be wonderful to be a trusted psychoanalyst. Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin. After Euromaidan revolution he was pardoned and together with Amina joined international peacekeeping battalion of volunteers to support Ukraine in fighting against the pro-Russian insurgency.
