During the selection of the best work for the Portrait category of the YToI 2015 we have decided to draw attention to other works with special mentions. These go to:
Lorenzo Papi | Italy
Nel silenzio svanendo (Vanishing in silence)
Lorenzo Papi has used a non-innovative language, influenced by Giacomelli, but has also the merit of finding an exceptional intensity when representing the experience of meeting his subjects. He writes, «My work starts from an investigation, a research on the concept of old age. Through these portraits I have examined the condition that elderly people often have in common, which is living in care homes where they will spend the last years of their lives. Getting to know the life and personality of the people portrayed from close up, I could observe some of the changes that happen in elderly people living in these contexts».
Francis Malapris | France
Modern Primitives
With a strong contemporary aesthetic, Francis Malapris' work surely deserves attention for his attempt to investigate beyond the superficiality of the tattoo phenomenon, intended as practice of extremely personal connotations. He writes, «Modern Primitives is a work on people with tattoos and on the reasons why they apply this irreversible practice to their bodies. In order to complete this project, I have met lots of different people and I have discovered many different ways of facing and interpreting these drawings, from looking for a social relevance to a purely aesthetic taste. Before taking each picture I talked for quite some time with the models trying to show the most intimate way in which these people talk about themselves».
Zsuzsa Darab | Hungary
Holding Cohesion
The object of research of this young Hungarian photographer is same level relationships, those between brothers and sisters. The author, Zsuzsa Darab, writes, «With my project I have tried to explore the relationships between brothers. I have tried to understand the different bonds among people, from the healthier ones to the most unusual ones. I am very interested in investigating the different roles that creates in the fight for power initiated among brothers and to observe how the subjects react and interact. I look for common people with everyday stories. In the book Sibling Bonds, Stephen Bank and Michael Kahn identify eight different types of same level relationships and I have tried to observe the people in my portrait basing myself on these categories».
