Purity, 2014

David Magnusson's work develops with a series of unsaturated portrays of fathers with their daughters. The photos were taken after the Purity Balls, which take place in the United States of America. During these events, young American girls promise to abstain from sexual intercourse before the marriage, and at the same time the parents commit to protect their daughters’ choices. In a country of catholic tradition such as Italy, the most interesting fact on this matter is that... the ceremony takes place in the USA and the photographers that decided to tell the story is Swedish. Coming from an education very far from this one, Magnusson decided to confront himself with something completely alien from his culture, trying to put prejudice aside. On one side, this formal choice is also reflected on playing half with images there are either very high or very low saturated, and on the other side, by a classic composition that, according to the author, will make both the girls and the fathers proud to look at.
In reality, the result is extremely alienating, not only for the dimensions of the prints and the real proportions of the subjects represented, but also for the shivering through the veins that one has when pushed to be confronted with prejudices of every kind. It is no surprise that the same Magnusson states: «Purity is a work that pushes us to think about the way we are shaped by the society we are part of and on what and how values make us interact with the world».
I personally felt a little uncomfortable and subtle apprehensive inside the room, and this only confirms the success of the author‘s intents as one of the possible developments of his work. [ S. I. ]

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer.
