It is the summer of 2011 and Matteo Di Giovanni (pictured left) is finishing his studies – a Masters in Photojournalism at the University of Westminster in London – and he is working on a photographic project that he will present as his final work. While in Bosnia and Herzegovina to complete his work he has a serious accident and goes into a coma. He awakens, unexpectedly, only in October, but in the meantime he underwent several operations including the trans femoral amputation of his left leg. From that moment he begins a new life with the clear desire to continue his experience as a professional photographer. In this context, about four years after the accident begins Reaching the Cape, a photographic project that will lead Matteo Di Giovanni from Italy to the North Cape, on an on the road adventure, thanks to new biotechnologies, capable of transforming the prospects of a person affected by disability.
This journey concretely and symbolically restarts the career of photographer for Matteo who, through it, intends to reclaim what seemed to have been denied to him forever. «Photography is a powerful medium – declares Matteo Di Giovanni –. And it is precisely from photography that I want to share and tell this amazing story. Going to the North Cape and back. And document everything to simply prove that life goes on and that passions give you the strength not to give up».
Reaching the Cape is a journey that Matteo wanted to undertake for some time and that in about two months will conduct him through different regions and climates, thanks to his will and to the new and innovative prosthesis, which represents the state of the art in the industry. Thanks to a biomedical technology at the highest level that will allow him to move independently, regardless of the environmental conditions, Matteo will be able to dedicate himself to photography returning to analogue. All this is to underline that in an enterprise like this the blend between state of the art technology and craftsmanship that requires great care there is a bridge created by the heart and the will of man who engages in projects that put their capabilities to the test. Accompanying him will be his friend, friend photographer and filmmaker Lucas Pernin, who will document the whole journey.
MiCamera is to curate the artistic direction of the project and there will be many supporters, including Gianni Romano's Studio Fahrenheit, Ryuichi Watanabe's New Old Camera, Alpa, and FPmag, which will dedicate a special space to follow Matteo on his journey by providing real-time updates to their readers on the progress of the project.
Everybody, however, is encouraged to participate in
Matteo's journey, contributing to the success of the first crowdfunding campaign, through which can be raised the funds necessary to complete the journey. To do this, simply make a contribution on Kickstarter by 30th September 2015.
