Rencontres d'Arles 2016: preview

The 47th edition of Les Rencontres d'Arles will officially open in early July, the famous French photographic festival conceived by the photographer Lucien Clergue.

The event will begin on 4th July, and as usual, will involve the small French town in a vibrant photographic festival which will offer a wealthy programme of exhibitions and events tended at giving back, as is customary, a snapshot as complete as possible of the key trends, new practices and changes taking place in the field of photography. A composite review that, until 25th September 2016, will try not only to satisfy the most difficult photographic appetites, but to define the current state of the art of photography, consolidating de facto the role of the festival as an observatory of excellence.

This year's edition will be the second one directed by Sam Stourdzé – successor of the historic artistic director François Hébel – and will branch along the guidelines set by the same Stourdzé last year, focusing on the latest developments of the photographic research, emerging talents and new fields of competence of this language. All in an effort to insert photography in a bigger picture, complex and articulated and not exempt from commixtures and contamination with other artistic disciplines

Returning to the programme, as always, it will be the so-called inaugural week (this year scheduled 4th to10th July) to kick off the festival and to propose a broad programme of meetings with artists, conferences, openings, guided tours, screenings, workshops, evening events and much more. The numerous exhibitions in the programme will once again be divided into different sections – Street, Western Stories, Monstres & Co., Africa Pop, Platforms of the visible, After War, I am writing to you from far off country, Rereading, Singular!, Outside the frame, Emergences, Arles Books, Prix Découverte, Associated programme, Grand Arles Express – that will involve both emerging authors and artists of international renown. Among the latter, Don McCullin, Andres Serrano, Eikoh Hosoe, William Klein and Mickael Ackerman, just to name a few. There will obviously be areas dedicated to photographic publishing and didactics, in addition to the now traditional initiatives to support young emerging photographers. Finally the tradition also continues, inaugurated last year, to consecrate the event to a distinguished personage in the industry. After the 2015 edition dedicated to Lucien Clergue, this year the festival is dedicated to Michel Tournier (1924 - 2016), co-founder of Les Rencontres d'Arles along with Lucien Clergue and Jean-Maurice Rouquette.
