The exhibition Robert Capa in Italia 1943-1944 has opened to the public on the 4th of July at Torre Capitania (Troina - Sicily). Curated by Beatrix Lengyel – and realized in partnership with Fratelli Alinari - Foundation for History of Photography and the Hungarian National Museum of Budapest – the exhibition displays 78 pics through which the passer-by can see crucial and last moments of the World War II.
Starting from the Operation Husky, in the wider project of the Italian Campaign, and going to the Battle of Anzio in winter 1944 passing through the Battle of Troina, the images displayed the real and authentic feelings and thoughts about war. The intimate prospective presented by Capa’s photography portraits a war fought in everyday-life in small towns and by ordinary people. Capa himself joined Allies troops for eight months and from the inside he has felt the same contrasting sensations and emotions felt by common men and soldiers.
In his works he has been able to hold the tragic sense of war, as John Steinbeck well explained: «Capa knew what to search and what to do after finding it. He knew, for example, that war can’t be portrayed because is mostly an emotion. But him, feeling that emotion, has been able to portrait it».
The exhibitions becomes mirror of Capa’s eye and soul, and reveals itself to the passers-by as a portrait of places and people became characters of World War II.
