While selecting the best work under the Storytelling category of the YToI 2015, we have decided to highlight with a special mention the works presented by:
José Tercero Mora | Mexico
Habitar la calle. La calle nos pertenece a todos
José Tercero Mora uses a rigorous composition and light contrasts suggesting a possible solution to the problem that has affected his city, La Paz (capital of Baja California Sur), and Mexico in general, for a long time: the widespread urban violence that as a result makes people hide in their homes. The author's merit is to offer us not only a work technically realised very well but also able to face the issue in a different and more proactive way. He states: «How do we recover social safety? How can photography help? My work is born from these questions and from the will to do something about it. I believe that going out on the streets to carry on our daily activities is a proactive action, as opposed to voluntary confinement. On a symbolic level, I have used the light of the screens to contrast darkness. I find here a double meaning: the white light represent taking back the public space, the everyday life, that people live. The darkness and the colourful lights are instead linked to the abandon of the public spaces and their alienation. The streets are everybody's».
Olga Matveeva | Russia
Feud
Olga Matveeva's work is developed on different levels and has an extremely contemporary aesthetic and syntax. It is some sort of journal that mixes the author's private photos and images taken from TV reports focused on the unstable political situation in Crimea, and that becomes a mirror of bigger global issues. The author writes: «The word Feud can be applied at the same time to the political context as well as to private relationships. Feud is the internecine fight where opposite parties often cannot explain their roots and primary objectives. [ ... ] Feud is also a category of the intimate space. People that once were close and shared a bed and a past, suddenly become worst enemies. Each one prepares a secret plan building an offensive strategy. Who started the conflict? And what is the origin of its nature? You almost become dependent on it, as it was some sort of drug. You feel like a caged animal that cannot escape».
Marta Zgierska | Poland
Post
Marta Zgierska's work started as a project on the effects of fear and changes in 2013 as a result of a very serious car incident in which the Polish photographer risked losing her life. It becomes in fact a work on the eke oration of trauma, some sort of interior monologue built through cold and essential images. Marta Zgierska's explains «My body and the pain have become source for the images. For this reason this series of photos has become more and more personal, straightforward and substantial. Behind every picture there is a story that in reality does not need to be told. It is like an intimate contact, that closes the past inexperience in the present».
