Street Portfolio

Personally I do not like the so-called street photography, definition, which moreover I find of questionable significance. The main reason for my aversion is attributable to the lack of substance in planning that normally underlies the work of those who dedicate themselves to this genre. However the exhibition by Israeli Gabi Ben Avraham with the disturbing (for me) title Street Portfolio makes a decidedly, pleasant exception. Beyond the proposition of images that clearly show a photographic view of the highest level, in fact, behind the exhibition it is not difficult to identify an impressive planning. Avraham pinpoints in street photography the tool able to highlight those signs of Western culture, which constitute the daily surplus of images, which, in turn, results in an inflation of signs and colours. In this constant visual noise everything ends up being assimilated even humans with their clothing, with tattoos covering their skin, in a generalised loss of individual identity that is itself a product controlled by the consumer system. The same Pop Art ends up disappearing in its original essence to become the subject of advertising purposes, in a cultural uniformity increasingly insistent and effective. The constant oscillation between art and industry ends up being highlighted by the intervention of the photographer, who through his camera introduces a separation between the elements, which allows redefining as such that art which had been enslaved to capitalism. The photographer, therefore, in suggesting to the viewer to put aside their passivity and take an active role inside of a process of endless conversion uses irony exercised through a series of quotes that allow you to become aware of the whole construction system of popular culture. Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer.
