1 / 3       Master Award, From There to Here. Immigration in the time of Fortress Europe by Giulio Piscitelli. Sahara desert, Libya, Border with Egypt, May 18th, 2014. Refugees crossing the desert and found in the desert by a local militia after 3 days of trip without water. In the area there aren’t no NGO’s or humanitarian groups that could help the refugees that almost everyday arrive from the desert, often injured or precarious health conditions. The militia found 3 vehicles with 85 refugees coming from Sudan and directed to Libya, stuck in the desert because of problems with the tires. In the picture the refugees run on the sand to reach one of the van that has restarted the trip after the repair of the tires and engine. The Sahara Desert, unites the sub-Saharan Africa, with the Maghreb countries. It is crossed by immigrants, mostly from East Africa and in particular political refugees, mostly from the Horn of Africa. The crossing of the Sahara is done with trucks, entrusted to criminal organizations involved in human trafficking. During the journey the passengers suffer the violence, by different kinds of militias much present in those territories (Libya, Chad, Sudan), and sometimes by the same smugglers who organize the trips. Over the past decade, at least 1,594 people have lost their lives crossing the Sahara, according to estimates of the site Fortress Europe. © Giulio Piscitelli/Contrasto.

Master Award: Giulio Piscitelli, From There to Here. Immigration in the time of Fortress Europe
«The project From There to Here. Immigration in the time of Fortress Europe by Giulio Piscitelli, which started in 2010 and is still ongoing, bears witness to the complexity of the flow of migration toward Europe. The work documents this reality by taking responsibility for retracing and remembering the extent of the geographic, economic, social and political panorama in which this historic event of crucial importance is becoming part. The project broadens the perspective by showing the bigger picture that is too often sacrificed due to the urgency of covering the constant daily reports of the tragic consequences of immigration. The photographer illustrates all stages of the migrants’ journey and manages to show us with great humanity the magnitude of the collective and individual odyssey these people face».

Spot Light Award: Elena Anosova, Section
«The project Section by Elena Anosova shows women condemned to serve sentences of different lengths in Siberian prisons. It deals with the subject in an original and sensitive way. Instead of exhibiting daily life inside the detention centre, the photographer chooses to show the prisoners through portraits of one woman or in pairs, where the space of the prison is minimized, becoming a neutral background. The frame of the portraits seems to give these women a moment of suspension from isolation and from constant surveillance, an intimate moment of self-meditation, sheltered from the endless exposure they are subjected to. The women are portrayed without judgment, with honesty and softness, and they are offered to the audience in their humanity and vulnerability».

Short Story Award: Mariano Silletti, Ludovicu
«This is a reportage that succeeds at joining the narrative of the real world of news report to a distant world, made of land, people and hidden places. The photographer manages to convey with a deep look a border, a line that only those who are personally involved in the situation can express. Ludovicu’s search becomes the subtle visual line that links the territory to its people and feelings».
