Waiting for Winter

A passionate tale about a world fallen in decline near to a rural world in which time appears stuck, these are the stories of the photographs by Rena Effendi’s works in exhibition from the 15^th of September at ILEX Gallery in Rome.
The exhibition, entitled Waiting for Winter and curated by Anna Arutiunova, displays three projects: Khainaliq Village (2006), Chernobyl: Still Life in the Zone (2010) and Built on grass (2014), which reveal a focus on the ability of men of surviving in difficult and complex lands. Men, beneath disadvantages, have been able to create a microcosm where they can take care and recover their land, can it be the one contaminated by the nuclear disaster of Cernobyl or the bucolic and wild one of the Transylvania. A world well explained by Rena Effendi’s words: «I saw a woman sitting on the porch of her house. So I asked her "What are you doing?" to which she responded: Nothing, just waiting for winter"».
The exhibition will be inaugurated at ILEX Gallery in Rome on Tuesday, September 15th at 7.00 pm.

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin. After Euromaidan revolution he was pardoned and together with Amina joined international peacekeeping battalion of volunteers to support Ukraine in fighting against the pro-Russian insurgency.
