The photographer had been very close to them as a child, but although he could visit daily, he found he soon ran out of things to say. One day he was struck by the way the light coming into the room was washed out between the white wall and the white doors. The aircraft are guided via satellite by distant operators. The attacks have resulted in a large number of fatalities, including hundreds of civilians.The photographer bought a small drone, fitted it with a camera, and flew it in the US over the sorts of gatherings that have become habitual targets for airstrikes abroad—weddings, funerals, groups of people praying or exercising. World Press Photo 2015: the exhibit

The exhibition that collects the images awarded in the photojournalistic contest hosted by World Press Photo Foundation of Amsterdam comes to Milan (Italy). From May 1st to June 2nd, the award-winning pictures that best describe 2014 on the worldwide press will be displayed without censorship at Galleria Carla Sozzani.
The World Press Photo contest – born in 1955 and led by an international jury of experts – came to his 58^th edition with an independent jury composed by 17 professionals called to express their judgements on 8 themed categories: contemporary issues, daily life, general news, long-term projects, nature, portraits, sports, spot news. 5,692 photographers have joined the contest, 97,912 images were submitted anonymously to the World Press Photo Foundation and 42 have been prized-winning press photographers. These are not only mere numbers but also the concrete result of an important debate over 2014 events and in addition a chance to reason about the photojournalism direction.
The prize Photo of the year 2014 has been given to Danish photographer Mads Nissen, who works for the daily newspaper Politiken. Nissen has condensed in a pic the difficulties faced by the LGBT community in Russia and, about this pic, the Jury chair Michele McNally – director of photography and assistant managing editor of The New York Times – said enthusiastically: «It is an historic time for the image… the winning image needs to be aesthetic, to have impact, and to have the potential to become iconic. This photo is aesthetically powerful, and it has humanity».

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin. After Euromaidan revolution he was pardoned and together with Amina joined international peacekeeping battalion of volunteers to support Ukraine in fighting against the pro-Russian insurgency.
