1 / 10       Jon and Alex, a gay couple, share an intimate moment at Alex’s home, a small apartment in St Petersburg, Russia. Life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people is becoming increasingly difficult in Russia. Sexual minorities face legal and social discrimination, harassment, and even violent hate-crime attacks from conservative religious and nationalistic groups. 2 / 10       Portraits of cadets in some of Europe’s most prestigious military academies. For centuries, military academies across Europe have upheld traditions of soldierly honor and discipline. Young officers-to-be are schooled not only in matters of combat, but are instilled with a sense of their heritage. Even though these academies are deeply tied to the ideas of nation and homeland, in today’s Europe they also provide bridges across borders. Breda, The Netherlands. © Paolo Verzone, Italy, Agence Vu. Portraits, third prize stories.

The man had attempted to climb over the back wall of the complex, before collapsing in a convulsive state. A complete breakdown of mental facilities is a common stage of advanced Ebola. The man died shortly after this picture was taken. Post Freetown, Sierra Leone. © Pete Muller, USA, National Geographic/The Washington. General News, first prize stories.

5 / 10       Failing health keeps the photographer’s grandparents, John and Prova, housebound in their old age. Life has become contained in a single room. The photographer had been very close to them as a child, but although he could visit daily, he found he soon ran out of things to say. One day he was struck by the way the light coming into the room was washed out between the white wall and the white doors. At that moment, the photographer says, he could relate what he was seeing to what he was felt about John and Prova’s silent, suspended lives. © Sarker Protick, Bangladesh. 7 / 10       Students in a school playground. Since 2002, the US has used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones) to collect intelligence and carry out airstrikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. The aircraft are guided via satellite by distant operators. The attacks have resulted in a large number of fatalities, including hundreds of civilians. The photographer bought a small drone, fitted it with a camera, and flew it in the US over the sorts of gatherings that have become habitual targets for airstrikes abroad—weddings, funerals, groups of people praying or exercising. He also used it to photograph settings in which drones are used to less lethal effect, such as oil fields, prisons, and the US-Mexico border. World Press Photo 2015: the exhibit

The exhibition that collects the images awarded in the photojournalistic contest hosted by World Press Photo Foundation of Amsterdam comes to Milan (Italy). From May 1st to June 2nd, the award-winning pictures that best describe 2014 on the worldwide press will be displayed without censorship at Galleria Carla Sozzani.
The World Press Photo contest – born in 1955 and led by an international jury of experts – came to his 58th edition with an independent jury composed by 17 professionals called to express their judgements on 8 themed categories: contemporary issues, daily life, general news, long-term projects, nature, portraits, sports, spot news. 5,692 photographers have joined the contest, 97,912 images were submitted anonymously to the World Press Photo Foundation and 42 have been prized-winning press photographers. These are not only mere numbers but also the concrete result of an important debate over 2014 events and in addition a chance to reason about the photojournalism direction.
The prize Photo of the year 2014 has been given to Danish photographer Mads Nissen, who works for the daily newspaper Politiken. Nissen has condensed in a pic the difficulties faced by the LGBT community in Russia and, about this pic, the Jury chair Michele McNally – director of photography and assistant managing editor of The New York Times – said enthusiastically: «It is an historic time for the image… the winning image needs to be aesthetic, to have impact, and to have the potential to become iconic. This photo is aesthetically powerful, and it has humanity».
