The sky is down on the ground

«This work was made in the area surrounding the Sruth Fada Conn estuary, Co. Mayo, Ireland, between 2009 and 2012. Since 2002 there has been strong resistance to the installation of a raw gas pipeline underneath the estuary. The people I spoke to and the places I visited were in part determined by my interest in this resistance. Spatially, the project is situated within the area where people felt themselves affected. Over the course of many conversations I became aware of a sense of duration beyond the timescale of oil companies and photographers, of a landscape that constantly changes and never changes. This is my attempt as an outsider to understand what remains». (Alice Myers)

We learn it when we are young, a game of memory that makes sense with the passing of time. In heaven and on earth. Leftovers from afternoons spent at catechism, messes on Sundays, evening preyers. When you grow up, the concept of faith changes, grows or diminishes. Either way, beyond the church or the mosque, beyond fanaticism or skepticism, some places strongly echo a greater sense of human existence.

We might forget it in the daily run, the city life can suppress it but in front of some wild landscapes we feel a pulse, a divine vibe that puts us back in place in the universe, reminding us how small we are, how superb while fragile. And yet we use the possessive mine, adding it in before the world, when it should perhaps be more accurate to say that we belong to it, us being shaped by the place we were born in, straighten by the winds, strengthened by the sea salt, built by the mountains.

In heaven and on earth. The images by Alice Myers are a wordless preyer that lingers on eyes and silent lips. Without asking the name of our god, if we have one, we feel that our life is worth little unless we open it up to the world that becomes home, in its vastness it calls us children. Photography that brings that sacred back in our days is an epiphany, a sense of marvel and respect that takes us further from the wars that haunt our days, wars that are unrelated to religion even when they hide behind religion. This is what works like Alice’s are for, to fight invisible enemies, unarmed. And further more, to prevent us from ever looking like these enemies. [ Sonia Borsato ]

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer.
